Boston 2027: Mistakes That Sink an Application

Most runners who miss Boston miss it on speed. A smaller group misses it on paperwork, and that is the avoidable kind. Qualifier registration for the 2027 Boston Marathon runs September 14 through 18, 2026, closing at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on the Friday, and every application has to survive verification before it is ever ranked against the cutoff. Here is what goes wrong, and what to check this week rather than during registration week.

Using the wrong age

The standard that applies to you is the one for your age on race day, April 19, 2027, not your age now and not your age when you ran the qualifier. Runners who have a birthday between today and that Monday routinely apply against a bracket that is one step too fast, decide they have no chance, and never submit. Others make the opposite error and claim a bracket they will not have reached. Check the date first: it is the single cheapest minute you will spend on this application. The details are in how Boston counts your age.

A race that does not count

The qualifying time has to come from a full marathon on a course certified by USA Track and Field, AIMS, or an equivalent national governing body. Virtual races do not count. Indoor races do not count. Relay legs, ultras with a marathon split, and untimed community events do not count either, however honest the effort was. If you cannot find your race in the certification list, assume the BAA cannot either. See the certified course requirement for how to verify a race before you build a season around it.

A time outside the qualifying window

The window for 2027 opened on September 13, 2025 and stays open through registration week itself. A marathon run before that date is simply not eligible, no matter how fast it was. This catches runners who set a lifetime best two autumns ago and assume it still travels. It also cuts the other way in your favour: a race in the first half of September 2026 can still be submitted if the results are posted in time, which is why late summer last chance races exist at all.

Submitting the gun time

Boston uses your official net time, the chip time, so submit that. Runners who copy the gun time off a printed certificate can hand themselves a slower number by a minute or more, and in a year where the cutoff is measured in minutes that is a real loss. Where the two differ, the detail is in gun time or chip time.

Forgetting the new downhill adjustment

New for this registration, a qualifying time run on a course with a large net elevation drop is adjusted before it is ranked. A drop of 1,500 to 2,999 feet adds five minutes to your submitted time, 3,000 to 5,999 feet adds ten minutes, and courses beyond 6,000 feet of net drop are not eligible for qualifying at all. Nothing is rejected here and nothing is hidden from you, but a runner who qualified by three minutes on a steep point to point course is now three minutes on the wrong side of the line. Work out where you actually stand with the 2027 downhill rule.

Details that do not match the results

Verification compares the name, date of birth and gender on your application against the published results of the race you named. A married name, a nickname on the bib, a transposed birth year, or a results page listing an age rather than a date can all stall a submission while a human sorts it out. If any of that applies to you, fix it at the source now, and use the pre-verification option inside Athletes' Village so the checking happens before the queue forms rather than during it.

Waiting until Friday

Applying on the first morning does not improve your odds, because acceptance is by buffer and not by order of arrival. Applying at the last hour, though, removes every bit of slack you might need if a document is queried or a results page is down. Submit early in the week, then leave it alone. If your time falls short of the cutoff you are automatically considered for the roughly one thousand places going to the new random Boston Qualifier Selection, so a near miss is worth applying with rather than writing off. Decisions go out to everyone by early October 2026.

Then there is the cutoff

Clean paperwork gets you ranked. It does not get you in. Our central estimate for 2027 is that you will need roughly 5:15 under your standard, give or take about 1:45, and that is our estimate rather than a BAA figure. To see where your own time sits, put your age, gender and finish time into the cutoff predictor. It returns your buffer, an estimated chance for this cycle, and whether that same buffer would have been accepted in each of the last thirteen real Boston cycles. The calendar itself is laid out in the 2027 registration dates.

Frequently asked questions

When is registration week for the 2027 Boston Marathon?

Qualifier registration runs September 14 through 18, 2026, closing at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on Friday, September 18. Applications are submitted through the BAA platform Athletes' Village. Acceptance is not first come, first served, so there is no advantage to applying on day one.

What age do I use for my Boston qualifying standard?

Your age on race day, April 19, 2027. That is not necessarily your age when you ran the qualifying marathon, and a birthday before race day can move you into a slower bracket that you are entitled to use.

Does Boston use gun time or chip time?

Chip time. The BAA uses your official submitted net time, so enter that figure rather than the gun time, which can be a minute or more slower in a large field.

Can a downhill marathon still qualify me for Boston 2027?

Yes, up to a point. A net drop of 1,500 to 2,999 feet adds five minutes to your submitted time and 3,000 to 5,999 feet adds ten minutes, while courses with more than 6,000 feet of net drop are not eligible for qualifying at all.

What happens if my qualifying time is slower than the cutoff?

You are not accepted in the ranked field, but for 2027 you are automatically in the pool for roughly one thousand places awarded by random selection among qualifiers who applied and did not beat the cutoff. Everyone is notified by early October 2026.
