Does a BQ Guarantee Entry to the Boston Marathon?
No. Meeting the Boston qualifying standard does not guarantee a place. The BAA is explicit: achieving your qualifying standard earns the opportunity to submit an application, not entry to the race.
Why fast runners still get turned away
Boston caps its field. When the number of qualified applicants is larger than the spots available, the BAA accepts the fastest applicants in each age and gender group and stops at the line. That line, expressed as time under the standard, is the cutoff. In 2024 it was 5:29, in 2025 it was 6:51, and in 2026 it was 4:34. In those years, runners who beat the standard by only a minute or two were rejected.
What to aim for instead
Treat the standard as the minimum and build a buffer on top of it. A predicted cutoff for 2027 is about 5:15 under the standard, with a wide range. The bigger your buffer, the safer you are. Check yours with the predictor.
