Fast BQ Courses and the 2027 Downhill Caveat
For years the advice was simple: to bank a big buffer, run a fast downhill marathon. For 2027 that advice comes with a caveat.
The downhill trade-off
A net-downhill course genuinely lowers your time, but it also batters your quads and, for 2027, the BAA discounts part of the advantage on the steepest courses. A time that looks like a huge buffer on paper may be assessed as smaller. The net effect is that extreme downhill courses are now a weaker buffer strategy.
A smarter target
A gently rolling or flat course, run well, gives a time that counts in full and legs that hold up to the finish. If you do run a downhill qualifier, build extra margin to absorb the discount, and treat the predictor odds as optimistic.
Frequently asked questions
Are downhill BQs still allowed?
Yes, downhill courses still count, but for 2027 the steepest net drops are partially discounted, reducing the buffer they appear to give.
How much extra buffer should a downhill qualifier add?
There is no published figure, so build a generous margin and assume part of your apparent buffer will be discounted.
