How to Build a Bigger BQ Buffer

If a bare BQ is no longer enough, the goal becomes margin. Here is where buffer actually comes from.

Pick a fair but fast course

A flat, well-supported, cool-weather marathon gives you the best honest shot at a fast time. Avoid hilly or hot races for a qualifying attempt. Note that for 2027 the steepest downhill courses are discounted, so chasing an extreme downhill is a weaker strategy than it used to be.

Train the right system

Marathon buffer comes from aerobic strength and a durable late-race pace: high mileage you can absorb, weekly long runs with marathon-pace segments, and a real taper. Most lost time happens in the last 10 km, so practice finishing strong.

Time it well

Qualify early in the window so you can take a second attempt if needed, and use the age-up rule if a birthday moves you to a more generous standard. Track your margin with the predictor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to add buffer?

A flat, cool course plus a focused marathon build usually yields the biggest honest improvement. Age-up timing can add buffer without running faster.

Do downhill courses still help?

Less than before. For 2027 the BAA discounts steeply net-downhill times, so the advantage is reduced.
