Is Baystate a Good BQ Course?

Short answer: yes, and for an unglamorous reason. The Baystate Marathon in Lowell, Massachusetts is two flat loops along the Merrimack River in mid October, and roughly 22.9 percent of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in both 2025 and 2024, with 24.7 percent in 2023 and 26.7 percent in 2022. That is close to one finisher in four at a race with barely a thousand marathon finishers. Nothing about the course is exciting. That is the point.

The profile is as flat as American marathons get

Baystate gains about 507 feet and loses about 511 feet over the full 26.2 miles, so the net change from start to finish is a handful of feet. There is no hill worth the name. The only climbs are the approaches to the bridges over the Merrimack, and you meet each of them twice because the course is a double loop starting and finishing at the Tsongas Center. The rest is gentle river valley grade on closed and quiet roads.

Because the finish sits at the same elevation as the start, the BAA's new net drop rule is irrelevant here. A Baystate time counts at full clock value with no asterisk, which is exactly what you want when you are trying to bank a margin you can rely on.

The weather is doing half the work

Mid October in northern Massachusetts gives a mean race morning temperature near 47 degrees, with an average low around 35 and an average high near 58. That is close to ideal marathon weather, and it is the quiet reason the qualifying rate holds up year after year. The tradeoff is the same one every October race carries: an unlucky warm year or a wet northeaster off the coast can undo the advantage entirely, and you have no fallback because the season is over. What a small double loop actually feels like

Around 1,140 people finished the marathon in 2025. A field that size means no corrals to fight through, clean tangents from the first mile, and a half marathon running alongside you for company early on. It also means long stretches where you are running alone, and a second lap past scenery you already know. Runners who need crowd energy to hold pace at mile 22 tend to struggle here. Runners who can hold an even effort on their own tend to run their best race of the year. Know which one you are before you enter, because the course will not carry you.

The self selection also inflates the headline number. People sign up for Baystate to chase a specific time, so a 23 percent qualifying rate describes a field of runners who arrived already close to their standard. It is still a real signal about conditions and terrain, just not a prediction about you.

Which Boston an October time counts for

Baystate 2026 is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2026. Registration Week for the 2027 Boston Marathon closes on September 18, 2026, a month earlier, so an October time cannot be used for 2027. It applies to the 2028 race instead, with the application window falling in September 2027. Hitting the standard is not the goal

Boston is oversubscribed and fills from the biggest margin under each age group standard downward, so meeting the standard only puts you in the queue. The 2026 race cut at 4:34 under the standard, and our central estimate for 2027 is about 5:15, which is our own estimate rather than a BAA figure.
