Is the Erie Marathon a Good BQ Course?
Short answer: yes, and by the numbers it is close to the best there is. The Erie Marathon at Presque Isle is a flat, cool, small-field September race that produces one of the highest Boston qualifying rates of any marathon in the United States. Roughly a third of finishers run a qualifying time in a typical year, which is several times the rate of a big-city major. The catch in 2026 is not the course at all. It is the calendar.
The flattest course you will find
Erie runs two loops of the road around Presque Isle State Park, a sand peninsula that curves into Lake Erie. Total elevation gain over the full 26.2 miles is in the region of 100 feet, and the gap between the highest and lowest point on the whole course is measured in single-digit feet. There is no hill to pace around, no bridge, no false flat that quietly takes ten seconds a mile. Whatever fitness you bring on the day is what shows up on the clock.
That flatness also keeps you clear of the new complication for this cycle. The BAA's downhill adjustment only touches courses with a net drop greater than 1,500 feet, and Erie starts and finishes in the same car park with essentially zero net change, so a time run here counts at full value. If you are weighing a steep point-to-point instead, read which marathons are too downhill for Boston 2027 before you enter.
What can go wrong
- Wind off the lake. A peninsula in Lake Erie is exposed by definition. The two-loop shape means you meet the same headwind section twice, once fresh and once at mile 22.
- September warmth. Mid-September mornings in Erie are usually cool, but not guaranteed. This is an earlier date than the late-autumn qualifiers, and a mild, humid year is the one real weather risk.
- A small, quiet field. The race caps at about 2,000 and often runs closer to half that. There is little crowd support and thin pack cover on the second loop, so you need to be comfortable running your own pace alone.
- Doing two laps. Passing the finish line at halfway is a mental test some runners dislike. Others find the familiarity of a known second loop helpful. Know which you are.
The 2026 calendar problem
Erie is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026. Boston's Qualifier Registration for the 2027 race opens the very next morning, Monday, September 14, and closes at 5:00 p.m. ET that Friday. That makes Erie 2026 a genuine last-chance qualifier: it is one of the final races in the qualifying window, and there is no slack in it at all. You would be applying with a result that is hours old, with no time to sort out a timing problem, a results posting delay, or a course certification question. Our note on the 2027 registration dates lays out the full timeline, and pre-verification explains what you cannot do when your qualifier is that fresh.
Treat that as a reason to plan, not a reason to skip the race. If Erie is your backup and you already hold a qualifying time from earlier in the window, the pressure is off entirely. If Erie is your only shot at Boston 2027, go in knowing the margin for error is a single day.
Getting in, and what buffer to aim at
Entry is straightforward: online registration, no lottery, a modest price by marathon standards, and a field that has not sold out in recent years. Register early anyway, because the cap is real and a race with this reputation can fill faster than its history suggests.
Then think in buffer, not in standards. Boston is oversubscribed, so the BAA accepts from the fastest margins under each age and gender standard downward. The 2026 race cut at 4:34 under the standard, and our central estimate for the 2027 cutoff is about 5:15. That is our estimate rather than a BAA figure, so aim to clear it comfortably rather than exactly. See how much buffer you need for the full reasoning.
Verdict
If you want the cleanest possible test of your marathon fitness with nothing between you and the number, Erie is arguably the best BQ course in the country. Flat, cheap, well run and honest. Just be clear-eyed about the September 13 date and what applying the next morning means. For other options with the same profile, see the flat qualifier list. Then put your age, gender and goal time into the cutoff predictor to see what buffer you are actually chasing and how it would have fared against thirteen years of real Boston cutoffs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Erie Marathon a Boston qualifier?
Yes. Erie is a USATF certified, chip-timed course with published results, so a time run there is a valid Boston qualifier. It is also net flat, so it is unaffected by the 2027 downhill adjustment and your clock time counts at full value.
Why does Erie have such a high BQ rate?
Two reasons reinforce each other. The Presque Isle course is about as flat as a road marathon gets, and the race attracts runners who came specifically to chase a qualifying time. Around a third of finishers have run a qualifying time in recent years, well above the rate at large city marathons.
Can an Erie 2026 finish be used for Boston 2027?
In principle yes, but with no margin. Erie is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, and Boston's Registration Week for 2027 opens the next day and closes Friday, September 18. That leaves no room for a results or verification problem, so it is a risky race to rely on as your only qualifier.
Is the Erie Marathon course hard to pace?
It is the opposite of hard to pace. There is almost no elevation change, so even splits are realistic and your effort maps cleanly onto pace. The variables are wind off Lake Erie, which you meet twice on the two-loop course, and running long stretches without a pack around you.
