Boston 2027: 33,656 Applied. What It Means

The Boston Athletic Association published the number on Monday, September 21, 2026: 33,656 qualifier entry applications were received during registration week for the 131st Boston Marathon on April 19, 2027. Applicants came from 129 countries and all 50 U.S. states. The BAA will now verify every submission, and acceptance or non-acceptance emails go out by early October. The cutoff itself is announced with those emails, so this count is the last hard fact available before the decision lands.

How the count compares

The useful comparison is the 2026 cycle, because the qualifying standards for 2027 are identical to the ones used then. That makes the two pools directly comparable in a way the 2024 and 2025 pools are not.

A rise of 1.2 percent is close to flat. It is not the ten percent jump that took the 2025 cutoff to 6:51, and it is not the retreat that a tightened standard produced for 2026. On pool size alone, the 2027 cutoff should land near the 4:34 of last year. The bands we published in the pre-announcement piece called anything between 33,000 and 34,500 a repeat of the 2026 cycle, and 33,656 sits squarely inside that.

Two things pull the cutoff away from last year

Pool size is not the only input, and this cycle has two mechanics that 2026 did not. The first is the Boston Qualifier Selection opportunity, a drawing of roughly a thousand places among qualifiers who miss the cutoff, explained in the selection explainer. Every place handed out that way is a place not filled by strict buffer ranking, which pushes the ranked cutoff up. The second is the downhill time index, which adjusts qualifying times from courses with a net drop of 1,500 feet or more before they are ranked. That trims buffers off part of the pool and pushes the ranked cutoff down. The BAA also noted in the same release that those indexes are subject to change ahead of the 2028 registration period, so anyone planning a canyon qualifier next year should not treat this year's numbers as settled.

Neither effect is large next to an applicant count, and they point in opposite directions. Netting them against a pool that grew by 1.2 percent, a cutoff a little above last year's 4:34 is the reasonable expectation. Our central estimate remains 5:15 under the standard, with a realistic range of 3:30 to 7:00, and the reasoning behind it is set out in the 2027 cutoff prediction. It is an estimate rather than a figure from the BAA, and it will be wrong by some amount.

What the count does rule out

Two scenarios are now off the table. A cutoff of zero, with every qualifier accepted as in 2022 and 2023, would need a pool close to the roughly 24,000 qualifier places available, and 33,656 is nowhere near that. Something in the region of nine thousand qualified runners will be turned away. At the other end, the record pool that produced 6:51 has not repeated, so a cutoff past seven minutes would require the pool to have gotten dramatically faster rather than dramatically bigger. Pools shift that way at the margins, not on that scale.

What to do with the next two weeks

Your application is fixed and the arithmetic is out of your hands, so the only thing left worth doing is calibrating your own expectation honestly. Put your age, gender and qualifying time into the cutoff predictor and read the historical column rather than the headline percentage. It replays your buffer against every real Boston cutoff since 2014, adjusted for the standards in force in each of those years, and tells you how many of those thirteen cycles would have accepted you. A buffer that clears all thirteen is safe under any plausible reading of 33,656 applications. A buffer that clears half of them is a coin flip, and it is better to know that now than to discover it in an inbox. The likely timing of that email is covered in when the 2027 cutoff will be announced.

Frequently asked questions

How many people applied to the 2027 Boston Marathon?

The Boston Athletic Association reported 33,656 qualifier entry applications, received between September 14 and 18, 2026, from athletes in 129 countries and all 50 U.S. states.

Is that more or fewer than last year?

More, but only slightly. The 2026 race drew 33,267 qualifier applications, so the 2027 pool is 389 larger, about 1.2 percent. The qualifying standards are identical across the two cycles, so the pools are directly comparable.

What cutoff does that point to for 2027?

Our estimate is 5:15 under the qualifying standard, with a realistic range of 3:30 to 7:00. A nearly flat applicant count argues for something close to the 4:34 cutoff of 2026, with the new qualifier drawing pushing it modestly higher. This is an estimate and not an official figure.

When will applicants find out?

The BAA says acceptance and non-acceptance emails go out by early October 2026, once every qualifying submission has been verified. The official cutoff is published at the same time.
