Last Chance to Qualify for Boston 2027
Short answer: you have until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, September 18, 2026 to submit a qualifying time for the 2027 Boston Marathon, and the race itself has to be run and officially scored before you apply. In practice that leaves roughly four weeks and a handful of marathon weekends. Any certified marathon run since the window opened on September 13, 2025 counts, so this is about the back end of the window, not the front.
The deadline that actually matters
Two dates get confused. The qualifying window is long: it opened the day after the 2026 Registration Week closed and it stays open right through the 2027 application period. The hard stop is Registration Week itself, September 14 to 18, 2026. Your qualifier can be run right up against that week, but the application has to be in before the Friday deadline, and the BAA needs a result it can verify. A race whose official results are still being posted on the Friday afternoon is a bad plan even if the calendar technically allows it. The full sequence is in the 2027 registration timeline.
What is left on the calendar
The classic last-chance slot is the weekend immediately before registration opens. The Erie Marathon at Presque Isle is the best known example, running Sunday, September 13, 2026, one day before the window opens. It is flat, small, certified and full of runners doing exactly this. Two loops of Presque Isle State Park with about ten feet between the high and low points is roughly as friendly a profile as North America offers, which is why it sells its 2,000 spots to a field heavy with people chasing a number. Our Erie course review goes through the trade-offs, including the summer training block it forces on you.
Beyond Erie there are late-August and early-September options: small flat certified races in the Pacific Northwest and the upper Midwest, Labor Day weekend marathons, and the Washington tunnel races that run through the summer. Check three things on any of them before you enter. Is the course certified. Is the 2026 date genuinely before September 18. And is the net elevation drop under 1,500 feet, because a steep downhill qualifier now gets five or ten minutes added to it during this very registration week, which can quietly undo the point of running it.
Is a last-minute qualifier worth it
Only if the buffer you expect is a real one. Squeaking under the standard four weeks from now does very little. Our central estimate for the 2027 cutoff is about 5:15 under the standard, an estimate rather than a BAA figure, and the 2026 race cut at 4:34. For a man aged 18 to 34 that means a 2:55:00 standard is not the target; something closer to 2:49:45 is. For a woman aged 18 to 34 the equivalent moves from 3:25:00 to around 3:19:45. A buffer of 7:00 or more is where an application starts to feel safe. If your realistic shape on a September start line is a bare qualifier, the better move is to skip it, target a strong autumn marathon, and apply for 2028 with margin instead of gambling a summer of training on the thinnest possible case. See how much buffer 2027 is likely to need for the reasoning behind that number.
If you already have a time
Then the last chance you should be worrying about is administrative, not athletic. Verify the time now so Registration Week is a five-minute form. Confirm the race name, the date, the finish time to the second, and that the result is searchable in the official results database. Then run your finish time and age through the predictor to see your buffer, your rough odds against the estimated cutoff, and whether that buffer would have been accepted in each of the last thirteen cycles. That last column is the honest one, because it uses real cutoffs rather than a forecast.
Frequently asked questions
What is the deadline to qualify for Boston 2027?
Your qualifying marathon must be run and officially scored in time to submit during Registration Week, which closes at 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, September 18, 2026. Times run since September 13, 2025 are eligible.
Which marathons are last-chance qualifiers for Boston 2027?
Any certified marathon finishing before the September 18, 2026 deadline. The best known is the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle on September 13, 2026, a flat two-loop course that runs the day before registration opens.
Can I run a marathon during Registration Week and still apply?
Technically yes if the result is official before the Friday 5:00 p.m. ET deadline, but it is a poor plan. Results posting and verification take time, and a delay means no application at all.
Is a bare qualifier worth chasing four weeks out?
Usually not. With a central 2027 cutoff estimate of 5:15 under the standard, a time that only just meets the standard is very unlikely to be accepted. Aiming for 7:00 or more, even if it takes another season, is the stronger play.
